ADTRAN Adds Session Border Control to IP Gateways and Routers
By Jacqueline Lee, Contributing Writer
By adding Session Border Control (SBC) to its NetVanta 3430 and 6000 series and Total Access 900e IP business gateways, ADTRAN (News - Alert) will enable service providers to handle monitoring, normalization and security for SIP trunking services.
Because the proliferation of IP will continue into the foreseeable future, SBC and Total Access 900e will help service providers offer a customer migration path.
“The Session Border Control functionality is a natural extension of ADTRAN’s IP Business Gateway (News - Alert) and Access Router product lines,” said Chris Thompson, ADTRAN’s senior product manager, Enterprise Networks Division. “It will enable our service provider customers to quickly and easily grow their SIP trunking business without having to purchase additional hardware.”
NetVanta and Total Access devices featuring SBC will handle firewall traversal, transcoding, VoIP protocol networking and transcoding, while giving service providers numerous troubleshooting tools. The devices will be used at the customer premise to address interoperability and interworking between the customer’s IP PBX (News - Alert) and the provider’s VoIP network.
“With this key technology in place, service providers will be able to connect a wide variety of premise-based communications solutions to their networks using native SIP trunking with increased confidence for interoperability,” added Thompson.
By emphasizing functionality in the enterprise network, service providers will be much better able to integrate with a wide variety of SIP implementations from IP PBX vendors. The clear point of demarcation provided by SBC will enable better network disaster recovery and security and failover policies without modifying the customer’s IP PBX. Providers will also be able to run more effective tests and view crucial performance metrics.
With these tools from ADTRAN at their disposal, service providers can direct their offerings toward both small and medium-sized enterprises – a market ADTRAN says is largely ignored.
“More and more businesses are turning to SIP trunking services as the connectivity option for their IP-based communications systems,” said Brian Riggs, Current Analysis (News - Alert) research director, business technology and software. “With the market for SIP trunking services set to quickly grow over the next several years, ADTRAN’s introduction of SBC functionality targeted toward the SMB and SME markets should help this market accelerate quickly.”
