The popularity of Internet telephony VoIP has prompted search engine giant Google (News - Alert) to offer voice service to hundreds of millions of users across the world. As reported by TMCnet, Google is offering Google Voice, a free VoIP service that gives free calling and texting in the U.S. and Canada, as well as cheap rates for those wanting to make international calls.

The service comes with a free phone number, and can be used from a web browser, from within Gmail, or from a smartphone such as the iPhone (News - Alert) or Android handsets. It is particularly well integrated with Android, since Google also makes that operating system software.

Besides free calling in the U.S., voice calls to countries such as India are only two cents per minute. According to PC Magazine, Google rates are comparable with international calling cards and other VoIP providers.

In others news this week, global Technology Marketing Corp. (TMC (News - Alert)) awarded Patton Electronics’ SmartNode 4670 VoIP IAD with ADSL interface as the 2012 Internet Telephony Product of the Year. This award marks the eighth year in a row that Patton Electronics has won the product of the year award.

Level 3 and its customer, one of the world's largest banking and financial services organizations, were selected for this award for showcasing the Ethernet business solution deployed to support this customer's connectivity throughout Brazil.
