TMCnet VoIP Routers Week in Review

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Welcome to this week in review, looking back at the week just past in the VoIP routers sector as reported by TMCnet.

First up, Run Communications recently became a new distributor for Patton Electronics in Canada. This new distribution relationship allows Run to offer an increased selection of telephony solutions for all segments of its customer base, namely integrators, resellers and service providers.

“Appointing Run Communications as a distribution partner demonstrates Patton’s intent to build market share in Canada,” said Sean Gerrity, regional director North America for Patton. “Run's proven knowledge and experience qualifies them to promote Patton’s SmartNode, BODi rS and CopperLink solutions throughout the Canadian telecommunications and security markets."

Next, Cisco has been moved to action by a recent demonstration of how easy it can be to hack a VoIP phone. The vulnerability was uncovered by Ang Gui, a fifth-year grad student at Columbia University Intrusion (News - Alert) Detection System Lab, using a Cisco product.

Gui's attack on the Cisco VoIP phone involved inserting different parts to the phone's Ethernet port and used his smartphone to intercept the conversation being conducted on the VoIP network while the phone was still hung up. Cisco doesn't have fix for this just yet, but they plan to release an Engineering Special before the end of January.

In other news, a Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) survey of VoIP consumers in North America found that magicJack is the overall best VoIP service provider according to respondents. Based in Israel, the company sells a device that plugs into a USB port of the user's computer, which enables unlimited phone call to the U.S. and Canada.

"Consumers rate magicJack higher than its major competitors," noted Frost & Sullivan senior analyst, Joerg Dittmer. "For overall quality, magicJack is rated 5.8 on a seven-point scale, while its major competitors much lower. In ease of use, billing practices, value and pricing, both magicJack's ratings and leads are also much stronger."

Meanwhile, SolveForce expanded its reach in Washington State with new services and telecom provider partners. New services include expense management, 3G fixed and mobile wireless and 4G WiMAX (News - Alert). The company will of course keep businesses in the area connected with business DSL, cable Internet, Data T1, satellite fixed wireless broadband and more.

SolveForce also offers businesses benefits including the ability to directly connect account executives with major Washington telecom carriers, professionally review Washington business communications infrastructure and avail the best voice and data services at the best price.

Lastly, BT (News - Alert) launched a new app that should save customers on their mobile phone bill with the BT SmartTalk app. This app allows mobile phone users in the U.K. to save when calling numbers in the 0800-0845 range and 0870 when calling the country from abroad.

The app specifically allows users to place free Wi-Fi calls to these numbers. SmartTalk supports up to five users on one calling plan and can actually be used from any data network, including 3G.

To find out more about Patton, visit the company at ITEXPO Miami 2013, taking place Jan. 29- Feb 1 in Miami, Florida. ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the world’s premier IP communications event. Visit Patton in booth #322. For more information on ITEXPO, click here.
