VoIP Routers Week in Review

By Jacqueline Lee, Contributing Writer

This week, the VoIP Routers community witnessed some emerging technology developments as well as some changes to well-known offerings. Let's review this past week's VoIP router news.

Last week, TMCnet reported that ViaSat had introduced Exude Voice for satellite Internet subscribers. This week, contributing editor Gary Kim (News - Alert) reported that HughesNet has introduced a similar service, which has industry experts feeling optimistic about the future of VoIP-over-satellite. In the past, VoIP-over satellite-issues included latency, jitter and packet loss.

In layman's terms, callers reported that the person on the other end sounds like they're underwater, or they report that calls sound choppy. They also reported call dropping, static and unwanted disconnection. With technology improvements like traffic shaping, VoIP-over-satellite could become a much more widespread solution for people in rural areas and other users of satellite Internet.

In other VoIP news, Vonage bagged a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a technology that can dynamically choose a pathway for voice communications over a network based on current network conditions. Vonage's (News - Alert) request to patent the technology got fast-track treatment from the Patent Office, which approved the request in just three months.

This patent caps off four other patents awarded to Vonage this year, including patents for conference calling, call rating and routing, calling card technologies and mobile wireless. According to Vonage CEO Kurt Rogers, the company currently has 170 patents pending with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Also this week, magicJack VocalTec debuted its New magicJack Plus (New MJ Plus). The device updates the current magicJack Plus by with better voice quality, enhanced memory features and faster processing power. The New MJ Plus also offers Wi-Fi connectivity as well as USB ports for attaching 4G or LTE (News - Alert) sources.

The new device sells for $49.90 and includes six months of free nationwide phone access. After the initial six-month period, customers can subscribe for $29.95 per month for a one-year renewal or pay $19.95 per month for a five-year renewal.

All of these companies have recognizable names, but each is taking VoIP in a new direction. To keep up with advances like these and more, join TMCnet daily for news from the VoIP Routers community.
